What Size TV Should You Mount? Here’s Our Rule of Thumb

TV Mounting Size Guide | What Size TV Should You Mount?

Choosing the right TV size can completely change how your room feels. Too small and it disappears on the wall. Too big and it overwhelms the space or sits uncomfortably close to your seating area.

At ZehmTV Mounting Services LLC, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“What size TV should I buy for my room?”

This TV mounting size guide is the simple rule of thumb we use when helping customers throughout Lakewood, Tacoma, Puyallup, Olympia, Seattle, JBLM, and the surrounding Washington areas.

55-Inch TVs

A 55-inch TV is usually the sweet spot for:

  • Bedrooms
  • Apartments
  • Smaller living rooms
  • Guest rooms
  • Offices

We typically recommend sitting around 7 feet away for the best viewing experience.

A mounted 55-inch TV also works great when paired with a soundbar and hidden wire concealment for a clean modern look without taking up furniture space.

65-Inch TVs

A 65-inch TV is the most popular size we install.

These are perfect for:

  • Standard living rooms
  • Family rooms
  • Open-concept homes
  • Fireplace TV mounting setups

The ideal viewing distance is usually around 8–9 feet.

If you’re debating between a 55” and a 65”, most homeowners end up happier going slightly bigger. Once mounted on the wall, TVs almost always appear smaller than expected.

75-Inch TVs

A 75-inch TV creates a much more cinematic experience and is ideal for:

  • Large living rooms
  • Home theaters
  • Bonus rooms
  • Open floor plans

We recommend around 10–11 feet of viewing distance.

This size is extremely popular for fireplace TV mounting projects and Samsung Frame TV installations because it fills larger walls beautifully without looking oversized.

85-Inch TVs

An 85-inch TV is built for big spaces and serious movie nights.

Best for:

  • Home theaters
  • Large great rooms
  • Luxury living spaces
  • Sports fans and gamers

Ideal viewing distance is usually around 12 feet or more.

These larger TVs require proper mounting support, especially above fireplaces, on brick, tile, or stone surfaces. Professional installation becomes even more important as screen size increases.

Our Rule of Thumb

If you’re stuck between two sizes, we usually recommend going bigger if:

  • Your room has enough viewing distance
  • You’re mounting above a fireplace
  • You mainly stream movies or sports
  • You want the “wow factor”

Very few customers ever say:
“I wish I bought a smaller TV.”

But plenty say:
“I should’ve gone bigger.”
